Hi I’m Aleesha, an average girl passionate about women’s rights and you may be wondering how it all began in the first place. Well I have just graduated from a Masters in Chemical Engineering (Alhamdulliah) and during my time there was a big difference between the number of boys in my class compared to the girls.

Me in my final year, in the process of doing my project

At first I thought this was the norm, but I soon realised that so many girls didn’t go for engineering because it was a typically “boy” subject, even if they were good at it or passionate about it and that there was a deeper issue here. And even if you get past societal norms and get into the degree so many women end up quitting their jobs in the STEM (Science, Engineering, Maths & Science) field, which is one of the reasons why there are so few women in the top positions.

This is where I started becoming vocal about women in STEM, to show other people that you can go into STEM, being a brown female (and you do it whilst being girly!). But the more vocal I started to become, I recognised that there were so many other issues that I wanted to talk about, that women faced in everyday life around the world. Thus, the concept of Aleesha Speaks was created. Where I literally “speak” on all of these issues that are so important to me.

I hope my platform can offer some insight and exposure to women from all different backgrounds, and that you can take something away from it.
